Osgood Schlatter’s disease occurs at the front of a child’s knee. It causes pain and inflammation located just below the knee cap, where the knee-tendon connects it to the shin bone. It is a common cause of knee pain in children aged 10 \u2013 15 years old. The disease was named after two physicians in 1903, Dr Robert Osgood and Dr Carl Schlatter. <\/p>\n
Causes<\/b><\/p>\n
Osgood Schlatter’s disease is known as a traction apophysitis. This is the medical term for when a tendon pulls on the bone in a growing child. Children who are involved in lots of sports and activities are more likely to get Osgood Schlatter’s. However, children that are not active can also get this condition. <\/p>\n
This disease often occurs more in boys aged 13 \u2013 15 years old, rather than girls. However, girls certainly also experience it and it often affects them earlier at 10 \u2013 12 years old. The age ranges can vary. Age, rapid growth and sporting activities together can contribute to this condition.<\/p>\n
Symptoms<\/b><\/p>\n
Pain at the front of the knee is the most common symptom. There may be a lump that develops and obvious signs of inflammation – redness and swelling. Exercises that involve running, jumping and lunging will be painful to perform. <\/p>\n
Treatment<\/b><\/p>\n
Treatment is individualised based on the nature and severity of the condition. Sports chiropractic treatments are recommended. <\/p>\n
