The natural history (how long it takes to get better) of acute low back pain is approximately:
- 60% of people recovering in 1-3 weeks
- 90% recovering in 6-8 weeks
- 96% recovering in 12 weeks
Causes of low back pain
Low back pain can be caused by joints, muscles, discs, nerves, ligaments, tendons, bones and other structures.

Sport
Athletes who compete in gymnastics, cricket, volleyball and football have a higher chance of associated low back problems because of repetitive activities, such as jumping, twisting and bending motions.
