What causes back and neck pain?

Back and neck pain can be caused by a variety of injuries, conditions and illnesses. In most cases back and neck pain comes from our musculoskeletal system that includes:

  • Muscles
  • Tendons
  • Ligaments
  • Joints
  • Cartilage
  • Bones.

Injuries and illnesses that commonly cause back and neck pain include

  • Muscle strains
  • Joint sprains
  • Disc injuries
  • Fractures
  • Inflammatory conditions.

What treatments help with back and neck pain?

A combination of passive treatments have been shown to improve back and neck pain

Passive treatments include:

  • Joint manipulation
  • Joint mobilisation
  • Massage
  • Accupunture/dry needling.

Active treatments include:

  • McKenzie exercises
  • Rehabilitation exercises
  • General exercises (walking, gym, pilates etc).

Back and neck pain is usually treated by a chiropractor or physiotherapist with a combination of passive and active treatments. Passive treatments are only relied on in the short term to settle pain down. Long term treatment is centred around active treatments. Chiropractors and physiotherapists should give you self management exercises. These are exercises you do by yourself longterm to both fix your pain and reduce the risk of it coming back.

How long does it take to fix back and neck pain?

It is very hard to say how long back pain will take to treat. Minor aches and injuries will typically resolve quickly (days to weeks). Large more complex injuries may take much longer (months). Your chiropractor or physiotherapist at Sydney Spine & Sports Centre (S3C) will give you a realistic prognosis of how long your back pain should take to improve.
