Jumpers knee
Jumpers knee or patellar tendonitis is an overuse injury that results in pain at the front of the knee, localised at a point towards the bottom of the kneecap. Patellar tendinopathy is the preferred term.
Causes
Repetitive strain from too much running or jumping causes inflammation or degeneration of the patellar tendon. Patellar tendonitis can be a tricky condition to treat and requires training (load) modification and a thorough treatment and rehabilitation program.
Symptoms
Symptoms include pain at the bottom of the kneecap, that is tender when pressing it. Athletes may experience aching and stiffness after exercise and while jumping, running or squatting.
Treatments
Treatment options are based on the nature and severity of the injury. Sports chiropractic and physiotherapy treatments are recommended. Both options will involve a comprehensive rehabilitation exercise program to reduce pain and restore function to the patellar tendon.
