A hernia occurs when an organ pushes through a muscle or tissue that holds it in place. Theses are most common in the abdominal area. With abdominal hernia’s loops of bowel protrude through weaknesses in the abdominal wall. If left untreated, hernia’s can become more problematic.
Around 80% of hernias are inguinal hernia. Inguinal hernias may be direct or indirect. Men are 25 times more likely to suffer an inguinal hernia than women. Indirect hernias happen when a loop of bowel protrudes through the deep inguinal ring. Direct hernias take place when part of the bowel protrudes through a weak point in the abdominal wall.
Symptoms of a hernia include pain in the groin area that may intensify when straining, training or exercising. Pain may increase during coughing and sneezing. If untreated the hernia may increase and bowel contents become incarcerated (trapped).
