Groin strain

A groin strain involves pulling or tearing the muscles of your groin and thigh and are usually related to activities such as sports and athletic events. Groin strains can occur from a one-off injury or ongoing repetitive stress over a given period of time.

Causes

The groin has five adductor muscles:

  1. Pectineus
  2. Adductor brevis
  3. Adductor longus
  4. Gracilis
  5. Adductor magnus

There are various causes of injuring one or more of these muscles. The causes of groin strains often occur because of:

  • Sprinting
  • Changing direction suddenly and quickly
  • Rapid movement of the leg against resistance
  • Biomechanical factors
  • Over stretching
  • Not warming up properly before exercise
  • Having weak adductor muscles
  • Previous injury.

Symptoms

Sudden sharp pain in the groin muscles or further up where the tendon attaches to the pelvic bone is a common indicator that a groin strain has occurred. This pain can be felt when sprinting or changing direction. Groin strains range from grade 1, 2, and 3, depending on the extent of the injury.

  • Grade one: Minor tear that involves pain
  • Grade two: Larger tear with pain, bruising and swelling
  • Grade three: Complete rupture.

Treatment

The treatment of a groin strain will be centred on reducing pain and restoring function to the groin muscles and structures. Chiropractic and rehabilitation treatment is an important part of this process. Rehabilitation exercise are necessary for a full recovery.
