Neck stiffness is also something that most of us will experience at some time in our lives. Neck stiffness is categorised by soreness and difficultly turning the head, usually worse side to side. Neck stiffness in itself is a symptom, and is caused by a primary cause such as degeneration or arthritis, muscle tightness or pain apprehension.
Symptoms of a stiff neck
We are probably all aware of what a stiff neck feels like. Neck stiffness may last for a few days or be ongoing. Its severity can range from a slight annoyance to extremely painful and limiting. There are a few instances where neck stiffness may be serious, such as cases of infection (meningitis) or fracture (trauma). Most acute forms of neck stiffness will resolve without any chiropractic or physiotherapy treatments. It is worthwhile and reasonable to visit a chiropractor or physiotherapist if you are experiencing neck stiffness, especially if it is associated with pain. A chiropractor or physiotherapist should assess neck pain if it is associated with a motor vehicle accident or any injury or is sudden for no apparent reason.
Treatments of a stiff neck
Most cases of neck stiffness with resolve with no treatment at all. However, others may persist and in these cases it is worthwhile having a chiropractor or physiotherapist look at your neck. Treatments for neck stiffness really depend on what’s causing it. Inflammation to a disc, muscle or joint may cause neck stiffness and typically pain and treatments will be targeted at removing pain and inflammation. In other cases neck stiffness will be due to the aging process and wear and tear of the neck. In these cases of neck stiffness there is more active strategies utilised by your chiropractor or physiotherapist that will allow for the recovery of the lost movements. Should a non-mechanical cause of neck stiffness be suspected such as an infective cause, prompt referral is given to another health care professional or team who can better manage this cause of neck stiffness.
