Shaken baby syndrome
Shaken baby syndrome is also called abusive head trauma, shaken impact syndrome, inflicted head injury and whiplash shake syndrome. This is a serious condition that causes brain injury and results from forcefully shaking a baby, infant or adolescent.
Symptoms of Shaken Baby Syndrome
This forceful shaking mechanism does a few things and one of those is injury to the soft tissues of the neck. Soft tissues injuries sustained during shaken baby syndrome can include neck muscles, ligaments, tendons, intervertebral discs and articular components of the neck. Shaken baby syndrome also destroys a child’s brain cells through the same mechanisms of concussion and prevents the brain from getting enough oxygen. This can result in permanent brain injury or death.
